The emergence of autonomous artificial intelligence-based systems has introduced new challenges to the attribution of ethical responsibility, as in these systems ethical consequences do not result from the decision of a single human agent but rather emerge from the interaction among humans, algorithms, data, and technological environments. The concept of the “responsibility gap” represents one of the most significant formulations of this challenge, referring to the difficulty of identifying the responsible agent under conditions of reduced control and predictability in autonomous systems. In this context, the debate between Robert Sparrow and Torben Swoboda reflects two different approaches: Sparrow, emphasizing the lack of sufficient conditions for responsibility attribution, argues for the possibility of a responsibility gap. In contrast, Swoboda, by redefining the criteria of control and predictability, argues for the possibility of preserving human responsibility. Employing conceptual analysis and comparative examination, this study reconsiders the conceptual foundations of the Sparrow–Swoboda debate based on the perspectives of Peter Verbeek. The findings indicate that, despite their different conclusions, Sparrow and Swoboda’s disagreement is grounded in shared assumptions concerning the separation of humans and technology, the instrumental view of technology, and a linear model of the relationship between action and outcome. From Verbeek’s perspective, these assumptions overlook the role of technology in shaping perception, decision-making, and possibilities for action. Therefore, the responsibility gap cannot be regarded merely as a problem of finding or failing to find a specific human agent; rather, it should be reconsidered within the framework of human–technology relations and the concept of “mediated responsibility.” This reframing does not attribute ethical responsibility to technology itself; instead, it emphasizes the necessity of understanding responsibility within a network of human and technological relations.

Futures studies, as an interdisciplinary science in scenario design, require ethical frameworks to prevent unjust consequences and guide macro trends. The present study, with the aim of explaining the position of ethics in futures studies and analyzing the challenges associated with it, uses a descriptive-analytical approach and, relying on a conceptual analysis of theoretical literature and reliable documents, examines the confrontation of consequentialist, duty-based, and virtue-based ethical theories with alternative futures. The research findings show that the lack of an ethical approach in macro predictions can lead to strategic errors in national and global policymaking. The analyses also indicate that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and climate engineering, without relying on responsible futures studies, increase risks such as the intensification of social inequalities, violations of human rights, and environmental crises. In this regard, the concept of intergenerational justice was identified as a key pillar in sustainable decision-making. Finally, the research concludes that integrating the principles of justice, transparency, and accountability with futures research methods, as a moral imperative, is a prerequisite for achieving a sustainable and humane future.

Recent developments in the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights indicate a gradual shift from classical public morality, grounded in socially accepted norms, toward a critical morality based on normative evaluation. This transformation has influenced the Court’s approach to balancing public interests and fundamental rights. This study aims to conceptualize and systematically articulate the role of critical morality in judicial practice through a qualitative, analytical–interpretive examination of selected landmark judgments of the Court. By analyzing the normative structure of judicial reasoning, the research identifies underlying moral principles embedded in the Court’s case law. The findings reveal a movement from morality understood as social consensus toward a framework centered on human dignity, individual autonomy, and critical reflection. The study proposes a coherent conceptual model of “critical morality in judicial practice,” clarifying the evolving relationship between public morality and the interpretation of human rights within the European human rights system.

The present study aimed to examine the relationship between ethical orientations and the propensity for research misconduct, with the moderating role of individual autonomy, among graduate accounting students and graduates in Iran. This study employed a descriptive-correlational research design. The statistical population consisted of master's and doctoral students and graduates in accounting across the country. A total of 174 participants were selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires. The study was conducted in 2024. The proposed research model, comprising four hypotheses, was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS software. The findings indicated that consequentialist ethical orientation was negatively and significantly associated with the propensity for research misconduct among graduate accounting students and graduates. Likewise, deontological ethical orientation showed a significant negative relationship with the propensity for research misconduct. Furthermore, individual autonomy played a significant moderating role by strengthening the negative relationships between ethical orientations and the propensity for research misconduct. In other words, higher levels of individual autonomy intensified the inhibitory effects of both ethical orientations on the propensity for research misconduct. These findings highlight the importance of fostering ethical orientations and promoting individual autonomy as complementary mechanisms for reducing the propensity for research misconduct. Strengthening these factors may contribute to enhancing the integrity, credibility, and trustworthiness of academic research and, consequently, support the advancement of scientific knowledge.

Moral weakness, or the gap between moral knowledge and moral action, is among the most significant issues in moral psychology and moral philosophy. This problem has served as a major arena for the expression of diverse ideas advanced by numerous thinkers and philosophers. One of the most prominent among them is Immanuel Kant, the German critical philosopher. Kant addresses the issue of moral weakness throughout his works in a scattered and unsystematic manner. Employing the method of content analysis, the present study examines the possibility, emergence, and remediation of moral weakness from Kant’s perspective. The findings indicate that Kant not only accepts the possibility of the occurrence of this phenomenon, but also identifies a number of factors as contributing to its emergence, including ambiguity in the moral law, the misleading influence of imagination, self-deception, weakness in generating sufficient motivation to actualize moral knowledge and belief, and the absence or insufficiency of such elements as well-being and health. In this connection, he also briefly refers to certain remedies for overcoming moral weakness, although these remedies, from the author’s point of view, call for further critical reflection.

As one of the modern and advanced technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) plays a vital role in improving quality of life and facilitating various processes across diverse sectors such as healthcare, transportation, and industry. Nevertheless, the widespread adoption of this technology is accompanied by significant security and ethical challenges and vulnerabilities that require particular attention. The present study aims to elucidate the ethical and security challenges within the IoT ecosystem and to propose effective measures for enhancing security conditions and ensuring compliance with ethical principles in this field. This research is theoretical in nature and employs a descriptive-analytical method. The findings indicate that the principal security issues in the Internet of Things include cyber attacks, weaknesses in security protocols, and the misuse of users’ sensitive data. Ethical concerns are likewise primarily centered on the unauthorized collection and use of personal data and the violation of privacy. The results of this study further demonstrate that the development of ethical artificial intelligence in such systems, regular updating of devices, user education and awareness-raising, transparency in artificial intelligence algorithms, prevention of algorithmic discrimination, long-term device support are among the most effective strategies for strengthening security and ethics in the Internet of Things.
