Mediating Ethics in the Scholarly and Practical Conduct of Mullā ʿAbdallāh Bahābādī Yazdī: Reflections on Argumentative Style and Social Practice

Abstract
Mullā Najm al-Dīn ʿAbdallāh Bahābādī Yazdī (d. 981 AH), widely known through the “Ḥāshiya-ye Mullā ʿAbdallāh,” stands at a pivotal intersection of scholarly traditions and Safavid-era socio-political realities. This article asks whether his argumentative style and practical conduct can be described through a coherent ethical pattern that may be called “mediating ethics.” By mediating ethics, we mean a cluster of epistemic virtues and practical dispositions through which a religious scholar, while remaining faithful to inherited tradition, reduces the intensity of conflict between competing poles (reason and transmission, Shiʿi and Sunni learning, seminary and state) and seeks workable forms of coexistence. Using a descriptive–analytical method and drawing on biographical sources alongside close reading of selected passages from his legal gloss on al-ʿAllāma al-Ḥillī’s Irshād al-Adhhān, the study identifies epistemic, normative, and institutional dimensions of his mediation. The findings suggest that Bahābādī combined critical traditionalism in scholarship with a measured engagement in public administration in Najaf, thereby offering a historically grounded model for contemporary debates on legal reasoning, religious authority, and relations with confessional “others.”

ملا نجم‌الدین عبدالله بهابادی یزدی (م ۹۸۱ق) از عالمان اثرگذار شیعه در قرن دهم هجری است. پرسش اصلی مقاله این است که آیا می‌توان بر اساس سبک استدلالی و رفتار عملی ملاعبدالله، از نوعی «اخلاق میانجی‌گر» سخن گفت؟ مقصود از اخلاق میانجی‌گر، منظومه‌ای از فضایل و رویّه‌های معرفتی و عملی است که در آن، عالم دینی در متن تعارض‌های معرفتی، مذهبی و سیاسی می‌کوشد با حفظ وفاداری به سنت، میان قطب‌های متخاصم (عقل و نقل، تشیع و تسنن، حوزه و دولت) نسبتِ کم‌تنش و سازنده‌ای برقرار کند. پژوهش حاضر با روش توصیفی ـ تحلیلی و با تکیه بر منابع دست‌اول و ثانوی، به بازسازی زمینه‌ تاریخی و زیست‌جهان او می‌پردازد و سپس با الهام از مفهوم «عقلانیت سنت‌مند» در فلسفه اخلاق معاصر و «سنت گفتمانی اسلامی»، مؤلفه‌های اخلاق میانجی‌گر در سیره علمی و عملی او را استخراج می‌کند. یافته‌ها نشان می‌دهد که ملاعبدالله در سطح نظری، با اتخاذ رویکردی حاشیه‌نگار و گفت‌وگومحور نسبت به متون منطقی و فقهی اهل‌سنت و شیعه، و در سطح عملی، با پذیرش مسئولیت اداره‌ نجف و بهره‌گیری حساب‌شده از فرصت‌های قدرت صفوی، توانسته است میان وفاداری به هویت شیعی و ضرورت همزیستی مذهبی و سیاسی، توازنی قابل‌توجه برقرار کند. این الگو می‌تواند برای مباحث معاصر فقه و اخلاق اسلامی، به‌ویژه در باب نسبت دین و دولت و شیوه مواجهه با «دیگری» مذهبی، الهام‌بخش باشد.
