The Flicker-Prone Nature of Frankfurt-Style Counterexamples: A Critique of Eleonore Stump’s Critique of the Flicker of Freedom Strategy

Abstract
According to the principle of alternative possibilities, an agent is morally responsible for performing an action only if they could have avoided performing that action. The purpose of Frankfurt-style counterexamples is to demonstrate the falsity of this principle. Proponents of these counterexamples argue that scenarios can be constructed in which, despite the agent being unable to avoid a particular action, our strong intuition is that the agent is still morally responsible for that action. One of the most important responses from defenders of the principle of alternative possibilities, aimed at challenging the effectiveness of Frankfurt-style counterexamples, is the flicker of freedom strategy. Advocates of the flicker of freedom this strategy believe that, in Frankfurt scenarios, a flicker of alternative possibilities is still open to the agent, and this prevents these scenarios from being genuine counterexamples to the principle of alternative possibilities. Eleonore Stump, a supporter of Frankfurt-style counterexamples, holds that it is possible to design a counterexample in which not even this flicker is available to the agent, and yet, despite having no alternative possibilities, the agent is still morally responsible for their action. This paper seeks to demonstrate the incoherence of Stump’s Frankfurt scenario and argues in favor of the flicker-prone nature of Frankfurt-style cases. The main finding of this research indicates that the presence of a flicker arises from the very nature of Frankfurt counterexamples. As a result, Frankfurt-style cases, by their very nature, always leave a flicker of freedom for the agent and, therefore, do not constitute a threat to the truth of the principle of alternative possibilities.

مسئلۀ اساسی این پژوهش، تبیین نقد اِلِنور استامپ بر راهبرد روزنۀ آزادی و بررسی انتقادی دیدگاه وی به روش توصیفی_تحلیلی است. بر اساس اصل امکان‌های بدیل، کنشگر تنها زمانی در قبالِ یک کنش مسؤولیت اخلاقی دارد که بتواند از انجام آن کنش اجتناب کند. هدف از مثال‌های نقض فرانکفورتی، نشان دادن کذبِ این اصل است. حامیان این مثال‌ها معتقدند که می‌توان سناریو‌هایی را طراحی کرد که در آنها به‌رغم اینکه کنشگر نمی‌تواند از انجام کنشِ به‌خصوصی اجتناب کند، امّا شهود قوی ما او را در قبالِ انجام آن کنش به‌لحاظ اخلاقی مسئول می‌داند. یکی از مهم‌ترین واکنش‌های مدافعان اصل امکان‌های بدیل در راستای به چالش کشیدن کارآمدیِ مثال‌های نقض فرانکفورتی، راهبرد روزنۀ آزادی است. طبق این راهبرد، کنشگر ترسیم شده در مثال‌های نقض فرانکفورتی، همچنان دارای نوع به‌خصوصی از توانایی اجتناب کردن است و چنین نیست که تمام گزینه‌های بدیل به روی او مسدود باشند. اِلِنور استامپ، یکی از حامیان مثال‌های نقض فرانکفورتی، معتقد است که می‌توان مثال نقضی طراحی کرد که در آن همین توانایی اجتناب کردنِ ویژه نیز برای کنشگر فراهم نباشد و با وجود اینکه کنشگر هیچ امکان بدیلی ندارد، همچنان به‌لحاظ اخلاقی در قبالِ کنش خویش مسئول است. در این پژوهش سعی می‌شود عدم انسجامِ مثال استامپ نشان داده شود. یافتۀ اصلی این پژوهش این است که روزنه‌خیزی، ناشی از ویژگی ذاتیِ مثال‌های نقض فانکفورتی است. در نتیجه باید گفت که مثال‌های فرانکفورتی، بنابر سرشتشان، روزنه‌ای از آزادی را برای کنشگر باقی می‌گذارند و بدین دلیل تهدیدی علیه اصل امکان‌های بدیل به شمار نمی‌روند.
